Some of the most serious lawn problems start where you cannot see them – below the surface and deep in the thatch. Grubs feeding on roots and other harmful insects feeding on grass blades can turn a green lawn into patchy, brown turf in a short period of time

Why Correct Diagnosis Matters?

Not every brown spot is caused by insects. Heat, drought, disease, and mower stress can all look similar to grub or insect damage. Treating without knowing the cause wastes time and money and can put unnecessary materials into your landscape.
Our professional licensed diagnosticians:

- Inspect and evaluate your turf before recommending any treatment.
- Look at timing, pattern, and severity of damage.
- Check the root zone for grubs and examine the canopy for surface-feeding insects.

If you are seeing brown spots in late summer or fall, grubs may be involved, but we always confirm before we treat. You can count on our degreed and Department of Agriculture certified representatives to make the proper choice for your property.

Grub Control With A Season-Long Guarantee

Grubs are the larvae of beetles that feed on grass roots. As they feed, the root system weakens and the turf can be rolled back like a loose carpet. Birds, skunks, and other animals may also start digging for a meal, making the damage even worse.
When you contract for preventive grub control with Scientific Plant Service:

- You receive a season-long guarantee on that protection.
- If active grubs are found in your turf during the covered period, we will kill them at no additional cost.

Our goal is to stop grub damage before it starts, so your lawn can hold color and density through the toughest part of the season.

Acelepryn Option

We now offer DuPont’s ACELEPRYN as an option for season-long grub control. Acelepryn is a very safe product for this purpose. It is so safe that the EPA does not require a signal word such as “Caution” on the label. When appropriate, we may recommend it as part of your preventive program.

Harmful Turf Insects Above The Soil

Grubs are not the only insects that can harm a lawn. Surface-feeding insects and thatch-dwelling pests can cause thinning and browning that often looks like drought stress.

By looking at both what is happening above and below the surface, we can build a control plan that fits what is actually attacking your turf.

Our Grubs and Insects service also considers:

  • Insects that feed on grass blades and stems in sunny, hot areas.
  • Insects that hide in thatch and move out to feed during the day or evening.
  • Patterns of damage that suggest insect activity rather than disease or heat alone.

Targeted Treatments, Not Wholesale Spraying

We do not apply insect control materials wholesale unless there is evidence of, or a known need for, their use.

This approach protects your lawn while also respecting the broader environment and the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

That means:

  • Products are only applied when inspection shows a real problem or a strong risk of one.
  • Materials are chosen and timed carefully so they do their job with as little extra impact as possible.
  • We avoid needless applications to your landscape environment.

What To Watch For?

It may be time to have your lawn evaluated for grubs or insects if you notice:

- Irregular brown patches that do not respond to watering.
- Turf that feels soft or spongy underfoot.
- Grass that pulls up easily with little or no root attached.
- Increased bird, raccoon, or skunk activity digging in the lawn.
- Sudden decline in sunny areas during late summer.

If you see any of these signs, our diagnosticians can determine whether insects are involved and recommend the right response.

Protect Your Lawn From Hidden Damage

If you suspect grubs or other insects are damaging your lawn, or if you want the peace of mind that comes with preventive protection, call Scientific Plant Service or request a lawn care evaluation. We will inspect your turf, explain what we find, and design a grub and insect control plan that keeps your lawn strong from the roots up.
