Lawn care doesn’t have to stop during the winter. Although your turf may be dormant, there are some steps you can take to prepare your lawn and make sure that you begin the spring ready to provide your lawn with all of the attention it requires to grow healthy throughout the spring and summer seasons.
Dormant Seeding
Turf Type Tall Fescue overseeding is generally not successful over the winter. Wait until March or early April to overseed. This will prepare your lawn for robust growth during the warm seasons.
Avoid Foot or Vehicular Traffic
Since turf is not actively growing, foot or vehicular traffic can damage the crowns of the turf. Traffic, when frost is present, will damage the leaf blades.
Maintain Your Mower
Now is the ideal time to tune up your mower. Check the height of the cut. Cool-season turf should be mowed no lower than 2.5 inches. Sharpen blades to provide a clean cut; dull mower blades make for a ragged cut and an unhealthy lawn. If you have not treated the gasoline with a stabilizer, now is the time to do it. Ethanol, which is added to gasoline in our area, attracts moisture from the air. Stabilizers prevent water from being attracted. If you take your mower to a repair shop for service, don’t wait until spring. Do it now while the shops are not as busy, and you can avoid the spring rush.
