Aeration and Overseeding After-Care for Your Lawn

Aeration and Overseeding After-Care for Your Lawn scientific plant service

Fall aeration and overseeding are highly recommended for any fescue lawn.

Fall aeration and overseeding are highly recommended for any cool season lawn. Turf-type Tall Fescue grass does not spread by stolons or rhizomes, so overseeding helps ensure that your lawn remains thick and without patches. Aeration is essential for breaking up compacted soil and opens the soil for movement of vital nutrients, water, and air. While you may know that aeration and overseeding are essential services often done in the fall, you may not know how best to care for your lawn once these treatments have been applied. Remember these tips for your yard once aeration and seeding are complete.

Avoid Mowing with Dull Blades

New seedlings have not fully developed root systems. Mowing with dull blades can rip the seedlings from the ground. Mowing with sharp blades will ensure a clean cut.

Water Your Lawn Consistently

Water lightly two or three times a day as the seeds germinate to keep them moist. After germination, switch to deeper and more infrequent watering. Water to the depth of the new roots and allow the soil to dry out between water cycles. Keep the soil moist but not flooded. Be careful not to overwater, however, as the excessive moisture can drown the new seeds or even lead to mold or fungal issues.

Refrain From Weed Control Treatments

Postpone weed control treatments until your new seedlings have matured. Young immature seedlings can be harmed by weed control treatments Be sure to discuss your professional lawn care treatment schedule with Scientific Plant Service, as we can recommend the best solution that ensures your lawn receives care without putting your new grass at risk.

Reduce Foot and Equipment Traffic

Heavy foot and equipment traffic can damage your newly established grass. Try to break up traffic patterns especially while the new seedlings are maturing. Alternate your mower pattern so the mower tires are not always in the same pattern. Move lawn furniture frequently to spread the wear resulting from outdoor gatherings.
