Pond & Lake Management Services in Maryland

Lakes, farm ponds, and ornamental water features look beautiful when they are healthy. When algae, invasive plants, or cloudy water take over, they become an eyesore and can even affect fish and wildlife. Scientific Plant Service (SPS) provides professional aquatics management for larger ornamental ponds, farm ponds, and other water bodies, with a special focus on phragmites eradication and long term vegetation control.

Aquatics Services

Our aquatics team manages:

- Ornamental ponds and water gardens.
- Farm and agricultural ponds.
- Retention and detention ponds.
- Lakes and community water features.

We help restore and maintain clear, attractive water while staying in compliance with state regulations.

Professional Aquatic Management In Maryland

Any time a chemical treatment is applied to or into a body of water in Maryland, a permit is required from the Maryland Department of the Environment. Scientific Plant Service handles the permitting process as part of our aquatics work, so you are not left guessing what is allowed.

The goal is not just a one time clean up. We aim for stable, long term control that keeps your pond or lake looking better through the entire season.

Our aquatics services can include:

Vegetation management and aquatic weed control.
Algae control programs for surface and filamentous algae.
Shading and pond dyes to help limit sunlight penetration.
Phragmites control and eradication.
Managing resident Canada geese damage.
Ongoing inspections and treatment schedules.

Algae Control

Algae is one of the first signs that a pond is out of balance. Thick mats on the surface, green scum around the edges, or cloudy, pea soup water all point to excess nutrients and sun exposure.
Our algae control programs:

- Start with an inspection of the pond, inflows, and surrounding landscape.
- Identify the type of algae and the conditions that are feeding it.
- Use approved products and methods to treat algae safely and effectively.
- Often pair algae control with vegetation management to address the root cause.

Algae often returns when the underlying plant and nutrient issues are ignored, so we build algae control into a broader aquatics plan.

Phragmites Control

Phragmites is a tall, invasive grass that can reach 10 to 12 feet in height. It grows along pond banks, shorelines, and in wet ditches, quickly crowding out desirable plants and blocking views.
Our phragmites control service:

- Identifies where phragmites stands are located and how dense they are.
- Uses targeted treatments at the right time of season to knock back the stand.
- Helps prevent the spread of this invasive species along your shoreline.
- Can be paired with follow up monitoring and retreatments as needed.

Left alone, phragmites can take over large sections of a shoreline. Early control is far easier than dealing with a fully established stand.

Resident Canada Geese Management

Resident Canada geese are an increasing challenge for ponds, lawns, and common areas. Large flocks can damage turf, foul walkways, and leave heavy droppings around water features, playgrounds, and shorelines.

Scientific Plant Service offers programs to help manage resident Canada geese pressure around ponds and adjacent landscapes. By combining habitat management, product applications, and planning, we help reduce the impact of flocks on your property.

Shades And Pond Dyes

Sunlight fuels plant and algae growth. When too much light penetrates the water, unwanted plants and algae gain an advantage.

We will recommend shading products where they make sense as part of your overall aquatics management plan.

Shades and pond dyes:

Limit the amount of sunlight that reaches deeper water.
Help reduce algae growth by interrupting the light plants depend on.
Improve the appearance of the pond with a more uniform color.
Are often used as part of a preventive strategy rather than a quick fix.

Vegetation Control

Undesirable aquatic vegetation is often the main driver behind algae problems and poor water quality. When oxygen levels, water depth, and nutrient levels are out of balance, invasive plants can quickly fill a pond.

Our vegetation control services:

- Identify which plants are beneficial and which are causing problems.
- Target unwanted species while preserving desirable vegetation where possible.
- Help open up sight lines, access points, and shoreline areas.
- Reduce the organic matter that decays and feeds future algae blooms.

Good vegetation management supports healthier water and a more attractive shoreline.

Since 1957, Scientific Plant Service has focused on the health of landscapes, trees, turf, and aquatic plants. Our aquatics programs bring that same level of care to your ponds and water features.

We treat your water features as part of the larger landscape, not as an isolated problem to be covered up.

When you work with SPS for aquatics management, you get:

Experienced technicians who understand aquatic plant and algae biology.
Services that comply with Maryland Department of the Environment requirements.
Integrated programs that combine algae control, vegetation management, shading, and phragmites control.
Ongoing monitoring and communication so you know how your pond is progressing.
