Your Spring Lawn Maintenance Calendar

Your spring lawn maintenance may include adding fresh mulch around your plants.

During the months of March through May, there are certain things you can do to maintain the health and beauty of your lawn. The professional lawn care team at Scientific Plant Service can help you determine and apply the necessary treatments and care your property requires. Your spring lawn maintenance needs are all designed to help your yard come out of the dormant season of winter and be prepared for the growing season, as well as higher temperatures and more frequent rainstorms. Prepare for excellent spring lawn care with the following tasks.

Test Your Irrigation System

Before you rely on your irrigation system to sustain your lawn, test it to ensure it works appropriately. Schedule any repairs, and if you plan to install a new system, do it now so you are ready when summer’s heat comes. Early spring is a great time to install new irrigation systems while the ground is still soft.

Note Soggy Sections of Your Lawn

Poor drainage is a common cause of failing and unattractive lawns. Fortunately, many options exist for improving drainage and reviving your lawn to its healthiest state. Consult the experienced pros at Scientific Plant Service to determine which options are best for your property.

Plant Trees and Shrubs

Planting new trees and shrubs in spring while the weather is still cool and wet is best. The ground will be softer, and your new plantings will have time to get better established before summer’s hotter and drier days. New plantings also need water more often than established plants.

Start Mowing Your Lawn

Once you notice new growth, start mowing your lawn again. If you have a regular lawn mowing service, make sure you are on the schedule to start up again this season. Additionally, ensure that your lawn mower blades are sharpened and at the proper mowing height. Check that you have the appropriate additional tools, such as lawn edgers, that help you trim the spots along your sidewalk or driveway.

Fertilize Your Lawn

Schedule fertilization for your lawn and apply pre-emergent herbicides to prevent unwanted grasses and weeds before they have a chance to germinate. You can schedule our Spring Pre-emergent weed control plus fertilizer as an efficient part of your spring lawn maintenance.

Prune Deciduous Trees and Shrubs

If you haven’t done so already, and the danger of new frost has passed, you can prune trees and shrubs. To keep your landscaping looking fresh, thin out your spring-blooming shrubs after the blossoms fade. You can also prune vines that grow over arbors and trellises to keep these plants from overtaking these beautiful features. Apply a Layer of Mulch Around Plants

Once the soil is warm, add a fresh layer of mulch around your plants to discourage weeds and help retain moisture when drier weather returns. Limit the total depth of mulch to 2 inches and do taper the mulch to none at the base of the tree or shrub.
