As we begin our 55th year, SPS is still committed to constantly improving our techniques and staff by attending seminars & recertification programs. During the 2011-2012 winter season we have or will attend the following:

December 1, 2011 - Pest Management Training Session -presented by University of MD Extension service

Subjects: Pest Update, Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), Stink Bug update, 2011 Challenges, pond management, turf weeds and much more.

January 19, 2012 - 31st Annual MD Arborist Association Winter Seminar

Subjects: Management strategies for EAB, invasive species update, disease update and product handling.

February 1, 2012 - Green Industry Educational Seminar - Key Speaker, Kevin Mathias from University of Maryland

Fatal Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)On The Move In Maryland

The Emerald Ash Borer, once thought to not reach the Maryland Suburbs until 2052, will be here much sooner.  For more information please click here to review the article by the Baltimore Sun.   

Once a tree is infected with borers, it can not be saved, the best solution to this invasive bug is preventative measures.

Generally, within the lawn care industry, we don’t anticipate seeing weeds emerge until the spring. That is when we need to get our tanks and herbicides back on the road in order to control weed problems. Lesser Celandine, however, has thrown us a curve and changes our schedule. Scientific Plant Service Staff Attends Seminar

Half of the staff of Scientific Plant Service attended an educational seminar on January 25, 2011.  This seminar presented by Fisher & Son Company focused on weed and pest control. The technicians also received recertification in materials handling and safety.

The balance of the staff will attend a similar seminar with additional information on fungus that can be so harmful to turf plantings. This seminar is scheduled for late February.
